When the winter sun melts the snow and ice, icicles start to form on the cold roof edges and gutters which over time can do a great deal of damage to the building and endanger vehicles and people passing by.

In order to avoid this and the manual work required to remove the ice, heating cables are installed in all drains such as gutter valleys, gutters, downpipes and eaves.

Optionally, heating cables are installed to melt the snow or slippery ice from ground areas.

The system can be used at home in pavements, driveways and walkways or in commercial car parks, ramps, steps and drainage areas.

But no matter where, safety and cost savings go hand-in-hand, when the heating system is controlled by the intelligent control Danfoss EFIT 850.

Where simple thermostats turn on the heating system in cold weather, the EFIT 850 waits until snow is actually falling.

This sense of snow saves you money. Install the Danfoss EFIT 850 with your snow melting system on the roof and save up to 80% or with your ground system and save up to 30%, compared to systems controlled by conventional thermostats.

The award is the most prestigious and toughest innovation competition in Slovenia, organized and granted by the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry. This year 185 innovations and more than 500 innovators participated in the competition.

The three Danfoss innovators Urh Hudoklin, Jens Jørgen Mølbæk and Benjamin Drobež convinced the committee with the IHPT controller concept, which has good control performance and enables building of very compact water heaters and flat stations. The effect is energy saving and lower production price.

Miha Bobič, R&D director for components in Danfoss District Heating, said: »IHPT was the first product on the market that is built-in in a heating substation as an independent product and that meets the strictest Swedish market criteria for regulation of preparing warm sanitary water.«

If the DH sector is able to adapt to much better insulated houses then yes, according to Günther Lang, manager of IG Passivhaus in Austria.

By journalist Jesper With

It could be any kind of conventionally constructed building, but the student hall of residence in Molkereistrasse in Vienna is anything but: It is a passive house, which means that its use of energy is many times lower than in a conventional building. 278 international students are living here enjoying the comfort that a passive house offers them. And since most students come to study in Vienna for a period of less than a year, around 800 students from all over the world live in the house every year.

- In this way information about living in a passive house is spread to lots of countries worldwide. Though it was not the original purpose, it is actually a very positive thing, since I am convinced, that passive houses have come to stay, Günther Jedliczka explains. He is manager of the ÖAD Housing Office that administrates the residence halls belonging to the Austrian Agency for International Cooperation in Education and Research. He explains that while the house in Molkereistrasse is the first residence hall built as a passive house, 3 more residence halls will open in 2009 and 2010 in Vienna and Linz. Based on 4 years of successful experiences.

Austria has got the biggest number of passive houses in the world after Germany and counted per person, the country actually by far has the biggest number. The development is skyrocketing. In 2007 Austria had 1,670 passive houses This year the number has reached 4,500 and is expected to double in 2 years. Most of the houses are private property, since public buildings haven’t been part of the boom until now. As always somebody needs to lead the way. The town of Wels (16,000 people), for instance, has got 1 m2 of passive house pr inhabitant. The town has decided that all new buildings and existing houses to be renovated must follow passive house standards. Vorarlberg, one of 7 Bundesländer in Austria, has 1.5 m2 pr person. But also the capital Vienna is moving fast forward and in Innsbruck 350 new flats following passive house standards have recently been made. In Tirol 1,200 flats are well on the way and supervised by the same building custodian.

- I think district heating makes good sense in combination with passive houses. But district heating systems and the needed technologies must be modernized, so that they fit to the much lower supplies of heat that low energy houses need. The whole point of passive houses is that they use a very low amount of extra energy - up to 90% less than conventional buildings. But especially in blocks of flats, where a lot of m2 are put on top of each other, it is a good idea to supply with district heating, what the building cannot generate by itself. In single-family houses you have to look at each case, Günther Lang, Director of IG Passivhaus (a network promoting the construction of passive houses in Austria), says.

If district heating is to have a future in a low-energy society a few recommendations should be met, in his opinion. If not he doubts, that it will be cost-effective to connect low-energy houses to DH networks.

Read about his recommendations and more details about this case story in the below PDF.

Project manager Jan Eric Thorsen from Danfoss District Heating (on photo) presents a recent project from the Danish city of Aarhus in order to elaborate on the topic.

“Bringing down CO2 emissions is a main topic of the world today. One of the means to achieve this is to combine a new modernized version of district heating systems with buildings with a very low heat demand”, says Jan Eric Thorsen. He is Senior Project Manager in Danfoss District Heating and has been involved in DH applications for more than 10 years.

New low-energy district heating systems can now be made so cost-effective, that they can be the best choice as heat supply for new low-energy houses. Such an example you find in the Danish city Aarhus, where blocks of flats are built according to the Danish standard Low-Energy Class 1. This class is next to the passive house standard.
“Here we prove, that district heating is the most cost-efficient solution, even though houses have a very low heat demand”, Jan Eric Thorsen says.

The project in Aarhus shows that:

The temperature in the DH pipelines must be brought down to 50-55 degrees Celsius. In that way loss of energy in the pipelines is reduced substantially. Further more it’s possible to utilise more renewable or waste heat sources due to the lower temperature level.

District heating pipelines must be of smaller dimensions and they should be high class pre-insulated. This minimizes further the loss of energy.

High performance technique in the installations is necessary, when the temperature in the pipelines is lowered from normally 70 to now 50 degrees. The district heating unit must have a very high performance in order to deliver hot water to the customers at a temperature of 47 degrees.

“We have proven that also in a future low-energy society with a larger number of low-energy houses than today, district heating is the best choice for customers, for society and for the climate”, Jan Eric Thorsen says.

A large number of district heating systems in Ukrainian cities need to be reconstructed. Therefore much work lies ahead for the capital of Kiev since only 6-7% of the systems have been modernized by now.

The blocks of flats along Romena Rollana Street in Kiev have recently had their district heating and hot water system reconstructed. Several outdated heating stations and an ineffective hot water system were until lately supplying the 220 flats, but after the reconstruction one single high-efficient substation is enough to supply all of them.

Viktor Vasilievich, a resident in the blocks for 37 years, is very satisfied because both the heating and hot water supply has become much more stable and reliable than ever before.
- Until this project finished we often had to let the hot water tap run for almost half an hour before the water turned warm. Sometimes it didn’t become warm at all. Now I just open the tap and the hot water is instantly warm - and even warmer than before, Viktor Vasilievich says.

This is due to the fact that the new substation is taking care of recirculation of the domestic hot water inside the building. Before the reconstruction, it was sent to the customers directly from the power plant several kilometers away. According to Vadym Aldoshyn, manager of District Heating & Water of Danfoss Ukraine, this meant a huge loss of heat in the hot water pipes, so that the water arrived to the flats being only 40 degrees Celsius warm. Today the water is sent to the flats at a constant temperature of 55 degrees.

Moreover, the flats are warmer than prior to the reconstruction because the heating system is much more stable. The improvements will also result in lower heating bills. - Before customers paid for heating all year around, whereas now they don’t pay in the 5 (summer) months when the district heating system is switched off, Vadym Aldoshyn explains.

The private construction company Teploenergomontazh has done the reconstruction project in co-operation with Danfoss. Vasiliy Bondarenko, a technical director from Teploenergomontazh, explains that the substation saves the blocks of flats 30-40% of their energy consumption compared to previous years, so the project is a huge success.

It is beautiful, it
is peaceful, and the air is wonderfully clean here in the Austrian Alps. Somehow you get the feeling that
the local Kötschach-Mauthen municipality’s choice to become as energy self-sufficient as possible makes good
sense - in the long run even entirely without the use of fossil fuels.

Near the small town of Kötschach, one of Austria’s first hydropower plants was built back in 1886. A few years later, the small plant started to supply Kötschach with electricity, which thus became one of the first towns in Western Austria with its own private electricity network. A direct line leads to modern Kötschach, since today this town and nearby Mauthen are nearly self-sufficient with electricity and heating - supplied with electricity from local small-scale hydropower stations and other renewable sources like wind and solar power, and provided with heating by a biomass- and biogas-fuelled district heating plant. Renewables are all the rage in Kötschach.

Danfoss has supplied the heating plant in Kötschach with 36 substations. The heating system is computerized
thanks to the Danfoss Energy Control System, meaning the heating plant is in constant contact with the controllers (Nopro controller type: OPR 0010) on each substation. This makes the whole system very effective and saves a lot of energy - and in other words money and CO2.

Green electricity for all of Austria

The family-owned energy company Alpen Adria Energie (AAE ) is the direct heir to the builder of the first hydropower plant, and is supplying Kötschach-Mauthen with electricity based on renewable hydropower produced in the mountains. But its ambitions are much higher: - We are supplying all the customers
in Kötschach-Mauthen, but at the same time we are connected to the public electricity network and are selling
green electricity (öko-Strom) to customers in Austria, Wilfried Klauss Jr. tells us. AAE has more than 7000 customers - big and small - all over Austria. And in these days of climate change the trend towards green energy is constantly increasing, no matter that the price per kWh is a little higher than average electricity prices in Austria. 90% of the electricity generated comes from hydropower, the rest from wind and biomass.

At the biomass plant
The biomass plant is situated just outside the center of Kötschach with its 3600 residents. It is plain to see that they are dealing with biomass here, since the storage facilities are filled with wood chips, delivered mainly by a local sawmill. In Kötschach energy production from renewable sources does not only bring CO2 emissions down - it also creates jobs and income to local residents.

The plant is a heating plant (no electricity production) supplying all the big energy users in town, including all public buildings like schools, kindergartens and the town council. The DH network is 3.3 km long, there is still scope for expansion, though, since most single-family houses are not yet supplied by energy from renewables.

Biomass is a buzz word in the hilly countryside around the village of Wiesmath in Lower Austria. Several villages in the area are being supplied by district heating from local biomass-fuelled heating plants.

And according to Mr. Otto Haberhauer - the manager of the shareholding company Biowärme Schneebergland that runs them all - the biomass must be local. - In times of climate changes it makes no sense that we bring wood chips from far away places like Russia. It has to be local wood so that the transport distance becomes as low as possible, he explains.

The heating plant in Wiesmath consists of two boilers that are fuelled solely by wood chips. That is, most of
the time only one boiler is in use. The second one is used only when it is really cold or in emergency situations.

The company has 220 shareholders - all farmers from the area around the heating plants - who are the ones that deliver wood chips to the heating plants. They receive a fixed price that is 15% higher than the market price, and have a long-term contract. This provides them with an income they can count on. The company’s philosophy is that farmers should be paid a fair price and the heating plants shouldn’t necessarily make a profit.

The purpose of Biowärme Schneebergland, which was established in 2000, is basically to build and operate heating plants connected to district heating networks. Today the local farmers deliver 6000 tons of wood chips pr. year divided between the heating plants in several villages - in the land of the 1000 hills as locals call this picturesque area.

Till now Danfoss has supplied more than 300 biomass-fuelled heating plants with substations and other equipment around Austria. This one in Wiesmath is a classical type. - We are solution providers and deliver total substations as a package. Since Danfoss has a long tradition within district heating, we are able to deliver what the customer needs. The dialogue with the customer is very important from day one of the project, Reinhild Horn from Marketing Communication at Danfoss District Heating in Austria explains.

DHP-AX is full of technical innovations and we strongly believe it will meet the requirements of a target audience looking for an affordable and reliable heating solution. The flexibility of the heat pump combined with a favourable price and high performance, means the end-user gets value for money,” says Lars Bergen, Marketing Director at Danfoss Heat Pumps.

The product has been developed at Danfoss research and development centre in Sweden. DHP-AX is available in four power outputs (6, 8, 10 and 12 kW) and is being launched all over Europe.

“We see very exciting possibilities for this product. Not least considering the new RES directive adopted by the European parliament, which classifies heat pumps as a renewable source of energy. Combined with the fact that Europe must increase the share of energy produced by renewable sources up to 2020 this opens up major opportunities for the future,” says Lars Bergen.

For more information:
Lars Bergen, Marketing Director, Danfoss Heat Pumps, Telephone: +45 7488 8616

He has amongst others left his minimalistic and uncompro-mising mark on products from B&O and Nilfisk. 15 of his creations are a part of the permanent exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Termix One is unmistakably a Jacob Jensen-design. An elegant, timeless and discreet idiom. And an ultra compact solution, which will embellish any utility room, kitchen or bathroom.

Termix One is based on the flow principle which ensures a continuous delivery of all the hot water a modern family needs in the kitchen, bathrooms, shower tower and jacuzzi tub. At the same time Termix One is one of the most energy conscious water heaters on the market. It is not only beautiful, but also operates energy-efficiently - and that will show on the heating bill.

Termix One is available with booster pump, which allows efficient operation also in areas with small district heating networks and low differential pressure in the network.

Follow the below link for more technical data about Termix One.

Since October 2007 the Holstebro based company Mogensen VVScomfort has installed Termix VMTD-F district heating units in 444 apartments at ‘Asagården’ owned by the building society ‘Holstebro Boligselskab’ in Holstebro. The district heating units are only a small part of a comprehensive renovation of the bathrooms in the 444 apartments. The project is expected to be finalized in December 2009.

Read the entire case story from Asagården in Holstebro, Denmark by clicking the below link.

One obvious advantage for the individual tenants is that they in future will be able to read their own specific consumption per apartment.

This new district heating unit also significantly minimizes the risk of lime scale and bacteria formation since the heat exchanger is based on the flow principle, which ensures clean, bacteria-free water abundantly in the new and elegant bathrooms at Asagården.

Business manager at Holstebro Boligselskab, Bjarne Nielsen, underlines that an important factor in choosing a heat exchanger solution was also the environmental aspect. This solution is considerably more energy efficient and will in future result in tangible savings for the individual tenants.

Termix VMTD-F is a complete district heating unit for use in connection with direct heating. The substation transfers a capacity of 300 kW on 2 heating circuits and is a domestic hot water system comprising a 500 liter storage volume.

The energy company Vattenfall delivers the district heating with a flow temperature of 136 °C and 25 bar. Thanks to the customized substation with its optimal dimensioning, weather compensation and high-quality automatic controls a maximum spread of 101 K is achieved. As a result the return temperature is only 35 °C making the network and system operation very economic.

Open the below PDF to read the full case story.

By International Project Manager Hamdi Saraç, Danfoss A/S, District Heating.

In the city of Changchun - capital of Jilin Province situated in north east of China - the citizens can breathe in clean air. A district heating project, which is constructed by Danfoss, results in 10% savings in coal usage amounting to 28,000 tons a year. This means 10% less CO2, SO2 and NOx.

The project covered two new district heating systems for the Yutan development area situated 15 kilometers from the city center of Changchun.

Changchun is situated in the Jilin Province, approx. 1000 kilometers north of Beijing. The city holds a population of approx. 2.8 million people, and the heating area in Changchun city covers more than 80 million m2.

With the construction of the two new district heating systems (northern Yutan Part and southern Yutan Part), heat supply for an area of 6.44 million m2 has been ensured. The total system capacity is 380.7 Mw heat, of which 169.2 Mw heat is needed for the northern area and 211.4 Mw heat for the southern area.

The district heating network has been converted from constant flow system to a variable flow system, where main booster pumps have been equipped with Danfoss frequency converters. This means that heat is supplied to the actual need, and residents in the city get heat 24 hours a day.

The 40 Danfoss district heating substations in various capacities from 3 Mw to 10 Mw are equipped with high quality and state-of-art components. All substations can be remote controlled and via the SCADA (supervisory control and Data Acquisition) system; the actual data can be evaluated and optimum operation of the district heating network and substations is ensured.

With this project the sky above Changchun city is now bright and air is clean. As a result of the project a 10% reduction of CO2 emissions, amounting to approximately 58,300 tons a year, 320 tons SO2 emissions a year and 58 tons NOx a year will be achieved.

In these difficult times, it is important for us to stand up and spread the word of our excellence within District Heating & Cooling. This congress is a brilliant opportunity to do that, especially having in mind the participants from EU countries, who are looking for inspiration in their efforts to reach the environmental goals set out by the European Union. Energy efficiency is a main part of the 20/20/20 goal, and District Heating and Cooling represents a powerful solution for increasing energy efficiency.”

With high-level policy presentations and debates, 8 workshops and over 70 speakers, the 34th Congress also includes the international exhibition of manufacturers, a study tour on 27th May - and a social programme for accompanying persons. Around 400 delegates from all corners of larger Europe and the World are expected to attend this year’s conference.

With that in mind it is safe to say that the exhibition was not only a success for the organizers, but also for us.

With lots of new exciting and energy efficient technologies emerging, the industry seems more or less resistant to the current global economic crisis.

The central theme at ISH 2009 was the systems approach: at almost all stands, manufacturers presented the twin climate protection strategy pursued by the heating sector and politicians: energy efficient heating systems, based on renewable energy.

“The high representation of the sector here leaves no doubt that they will provide consumers with the right answers for saving costs and energy, thereby helping to protect the environment. Our industry is confident that it will retain the market volume of the previous year – at least in Germany”, said Klaus Jesse, member of the steering committee of the German Central Heating Industry Association (VdZ) and President of the German Industrial Association for Building, Energy and Environmental Technology (BDH).

As mentioned Danfoss had several stands at the fair, demonstrating its competencies within both components and total heating systems. At the stand in hall 9.0 we, for instance, presented our domestic hot water systems interactively via small flash animations. You can download and install these flash animations which show how our dhw solutions: ThermoDual®, ThermoClean®, Legiomin® and Legiokill® function by clicking the below link.

The animations are in German and to view them you must unzip the file you download and save the files somewhere on your computer. Then double-click on the .exe file to view it.

Shortly after the fair ended our internal sales departments started following up on all visits paid to our stands during the exhibition. We, of course, wish to respond to all requests as soon as possible and have already continued many of the consults held at the fair.

We met many visitors, customers, colleagues and business peers from around the globe during this year’s ISH and look forward to meeting you again on the next fair!

Especially shops and office buildings are estimated to require more cooling in future.

From this month digital TV broadcasting replaces the current analog TV broadcasting in Denmark. A total of 80 units are to be delivered.

Cooling will secure that the digital TV transmitters remain chilled. The technical equipment in the digital transmitters requires efficient cooling. If the temperature in the transmitters gets too high, they will fail and the result will be blackouts on Danish TV screens.

There are 17 television transmitting stations across Denmark which transmit television signals to the Danes. They are owned by TV2/DENMARK and DR in a joint venture company named ‘Broadcast Service Danmark’.

René Hansen, service technician at Gemina Termix, tells that the cooling units have been built in various dimensions at the factory in Sunds due to different space requirements at each of the transmitting stations where the conditions are very different.

The cooling of the transmitting stations is constructed to lead surplus heat over into a tower next to the transmitting tower where it is cooled down. In Sweden the surplus heat from the transmitters is reused for heating the station buildings. In Denmark we have not yet taken advantage of this because it would require a total renovation of the heating units in all the buildings.

The main contractor on this project is Bravida in Aalborg, who delivers Gemina Termix’s solution to Broadcast Service Danmark. The cooling unit has been developed in a close cooperation with Bravida, who is also responsible for the development of the controller for the cooling unit.

Gemina Termix has not previously dealt with cooling, but in principle the cooling unit is a "reversed" heat exchanger. The largest challenge for Gemina Termix in connection with the development of the cooling units has been to meet the demands of specifications and special measurements.

Gemina Termix has recently delivered several compact stations to Norway for use in cooling applications in companies with e.g. large glass facades - and currently cooling units are being produced for customers in Spain.

On the photo Bo Rasmussen from the forging department is mounting a cooling unit which is to be sent to a transmitting station in Hedensted.
