The former three divisions will become five more targeted and flexible units, each reporting directly to Danfoss’ Chief Operations Officer, Kim Fausing.

At the same time, we need to make sure that Danfoss is more flexible and easier to do business with. This is why we have decided to re-organise our business into five new divisions. At first sight, going from three to five could seem to be the opposite of the ideal way forward, but the philosophy is that, principally and thanks to the new structure, we will have a flat organisation since the new divisions will directly reflect the market areas within which we operate. Therefore, we will be able to avoid a great deal of internal coordination,” explains COO and Executive Vice President Kim Fausing.

The final structure of the new divisions will be completed during the remaining months of 2009 to become fully operational at the beginning of 2010.

”In combination with the change of the top management, which was carried out about four weeks ago, when Executive Vice President and CDO Nis Storgaard was given the responsibility of a number of business units set to undergo a restructuring and strategy clarification process, we now have in place an organisational and business structure which will support our core competencies and core strengths:

At Danfoss Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Controls, we will have the products and services that make Danfoss an absolute leader in the global market, when it comes to energy-efficient control and regulation of refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. Danfoss Commercial Compressors is set to concentrate on the targeted use of our global position as a number two within the development and supply of the most energy-efficient compressor solutions for the commercial refrigeration and air-conditioning market. Danfoss Heating Solutions will cover the solutions and products which, with the least possible energy consumption, ensure comfort and climate control in buildings, whereas Danfoss District Energy will be able to fully concentrate on expanding Danfoss’ position as the world’s leading supplier of components and part-solutions for district heating and district cooling. Thereby, we intend to speed up even more the further development of solutions for this area, which make up the most climate-friendly and efficient distribution of energy available in the world. At Danfoss Motion Controls, we continuously aim to strive for the absolute best options within transmission technical solutions, where our tradition within optimal energy-efficiency can be utilised even more. The division also includes Danfoss’ activities relating to solar energy and the wind turbine sector,” says Kim Fausing.

The reorganisation will result in the closing down of a range of corporate functions.

”It is still too early to say anything certain about how many leaders and salaried employees will be made redundant. This will be decided during the completion process which will take place over the next few months, but it is certain that a number of jobs will be lost,” says Kim Fausing, who expects most job cuts to take place through redeployment and voluntary agreements.

Sauer-Danfoss, a listed company headed by CEO and President Sven Ruder, is an independent company, but due to the Danfoss Group’s ownership of the controlling interest, Sauer-Danfoss’ development, production and sale of mobile hydraulics is, in principle, the sixth business area in the Danfoss Group. The changed business structure has no impact on Sauer-Danfoss.

The SIB ZERO +House is the name of Denmark's first low energy +house. The house, which was recently completed in the town of Sønderborg, has positive annual energy costs and provides a glimpse of tomorrow's energy efficient home.

The 200 m2 home actually produces more electricity than it consumes on an annual basis, which is why it is known as a +house. The excess energy is created through a unique combination of known technologies that turn the home's energy consumption into energy production. Danfoss contributed with solutions for the indoor climate and comfort system to this project, which includes the use of a Danfoss Air system and Danfoss fast acting floor heating.

One of the secrets behind the low energy +house is effective insulation. However, the well insulated home also requires efficient ventilation in order to maintain a healthy indoor climate. In this case, mechanical ventilation combined with heat recovery was the only real solution. Anything else would have resulted in excess energy consumption.

In order to further optimize energy consumption, Danfoss has combined the ventilation system with a so-called geothermic preheating surface which consists of an 80 meter long pipe in the garden that captures heat in the ground produced by the sun. This energy can then be used to heat the air in the winter months and cool down fresh air in the summer.

Danfoss' energy efficient total solution is perfected by an underground heating pump that heats up utility water and is used for the home's central heating. The heat is emitted via fast acting floor heating that is controlled precisely by a wireless thermostat that uses infrared sensors to measure the floor's surface temperature.

The SIB ZERO +House is an excellent example of Danfoss' wide range of professional and energy saving solutions put into practice. Danfoss is also an active and leading figure on a market that is increasingly focused on low energy consumption.

Danish companies and institutions of science join forces to speed up the Danish exports of heating solutions: Grundfos, Danfoss, Logstor, the University of Southern Denmark and Copenhagen University College of Engineering are just some of the players behind a new center of development, which was decided apon on September 25th 2009.

The district heating sector in Denmark is working together in order to ensure research, development, testing and training in a sector that annually makes a turnover of more than 16 billion Danish kroner. In the future there will be a huge export potential in district heating solutions which are high on the wanting list for countries like China and India.

This is an important step for the district heating sector. In the longer term, there is a huge potential in both climate profit and of creating jobs, says Anders Hanberg Sorensen, who is rector of the Engineers´ School in Aarhus and the new chairman for the district heating Center of Development.

District Heating Leadership

Denmark is a world leader within district heating and all its major cities are supplied with district heating. This fact must be utilized in order to boost the export and therefore it is important to round up the players.

»The District Heating industry has come an unbelievably long way on isolated achievements, but if we are to move further ahead it must happen united, and that is what the new center of development must ensure. It will rub off on the opportunities to develop new solutions and sell our solutions in other countries where it can be valuable to offer a complete concept in stead of standalone technologies,« says Anders Hanberg Sørensen.

In addition to the export opportunities the aim is also very much to develop new solutions for the benefit of the Danish system. Gradually as renewable energy will become an even larger part of the Danish energy supply, there will amongst other be a need to be able to store energy. This is only one of the challenges which the new center of development must be a part of finding solutions to.

»We will boost the system, we have in this country. And if we can use Denmark as a test station, we also have a golden opportunity to increase our export. The object is e.g. to minimize the energy loss to the consumers and to find solutions to storage of the energy. We can be a part of that,« says Anders Hanberg Sørensen.

The environment and climate could benefit as a result, too.

The four cities - Chicago, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro and Madrid - seeking to host the Olympic Games in 2016 can reduce their CO2 emissions by as much as 40 per cent with district heating and district cooling systems!

"Technology is no hindrance – the solutions for district heating and district cooling are already developed and efficient. But this type of technology requires planning, long-term investment and, therefore, political focus and will. When it comes to hosting the Olympic Games, cities make major infrastructure investments that involve many organizations, so considering district heating and district cooling is a natural component," says COWI Head of Department Jens Ole Hansen.

Sustainability is already a key criterion of the International Olympic Committee's evaluation of the four cities competing to become the 2016 host city.

Optimization instead of innovation
"Currently there is major interest in anything that's green and climate-friendly. But people tend to overlook the great potential of putting the energy to a better use and minimizing waste. It is of course thrilling to focus on the technology of the future, but we would advise the next host city of the Olympic Games to focus on long-term planning and the best use of existing solutions. This is the most reliable way to do the climate a favour," says Jens Ole Hansen.

Denmark is one of the world's most energy-efficient countries
Denmark is one of the world's leading countries when it comes to combining the heat and power supply in urban areas. Heating plans are an integral part of town planning, with 60 per cent of all Danish households linked to the district heating network.

The focus on combined heat and power plants means that Denmark is now one of the most energy-efficient countries in the world and has managed to keep its energy consumption at the same level since 1980, while GNP has increased by nearly 80 per cent in the same period.

District heating network is key
In Europe, about one third of all energy production is squandered, because waste heat from the production of electricity is not utilized.

"Denmark has found that a well-developed district heating network is a key component to optimal utilization of energy. Countries with warmer weather have similar experiences with district cooling networks," says Jens Ole Hansen.

World leaders in district heating and cooling technology
Four world-leading Danish companies within district heating technology, Grundfos, Danfoss, Logstor and COWI, have joined forces to spread the word about the major energy saving potential of district heating and district cooling.

In a joint booth, COWI, Logstor, Grundfos and Danfoss will put the spotlight on DHC (District Heating & Cooling) as a central part of the energy infrastructure of the future.

It is also the perfect venue to show the significant benefits that DHC offers for communities and end users due to the well functioning energy infrastructure of Copenhagen which is based on CHP (Combined Heat and Power).

COWI, Logstor, Grundfos and Danfoss have joined forces to promote the concept of district energy. The key messages of the stand are based on the White Paper published by the four companies in 2007. These include the efficiency of CHP solutions, renewable energy sources as part of DHC, the value of heat/energy planning and the RES directive passed by EU. The Copenhagen case will also be a central issue in the booth as a state-of-the-art example of the impact that careful heat planning and a well functioning district energy infrastructure has.

The expected outcome of the participation at Bright Green is:

for visitors to gain better knowledge of the concept of district energy

and an increased recognition of district energy as a central part of the energy system of the future

Hopefully, the fair will be well visited and these objectives will be met.

If you have floor heating, maybe you have experienced the need for opening one or more windows while you are entertaining guests because the room just gets too hot? Or maybe your house is a bit too hot when you return from work on a sunny spring day? The lack of comfort can be frustrating not to mention the unnecessary waste of heat in times when focus is on energy saving and CO2 reductions. The Danfoss SpeedUp™ dry system overcomes these obstacles and offers quick and easy installation and rapid reaction to your wishes.

This results in a thermal “heavy” floor construction which has slow reaction time and is by that difficult to regulate and adjust over a short period. A “dry” floor heating system such as Danfoss’ SpeedUp™ is a floor heating system where no screed is required! This leads to faster, easier installation and shorter heating up and cooling down times, giving benefits such as energy savings and improved comfort and thereby solves the normal floor heating problems.

Significant cost reductions - 15% on your heating costs!
The active “dry” floor heating system SpeedUp™ is ideal in combination with room thermostats with programmable temperature setback functions. This resulting in very precise comfort control and significant energy and cost savings in heating. This can be achieved, with Danfoss’ wireless CF2 control system with remote controller. The annual energy consumption for a typical house in Germany which such solution would be as follows. With SpeedUp™ you can save up to 15 % of the energy consumption of an equivalent heavy wet concrete floor heating system.

Optimized comfort
The “dry” floor heating system SpeeUp™, due to lightweight materials and quick reaction time, constantly ensures a room temperature that is significantly closer to the desired room temperature compared to a heavy wet concrete floor heating system. This again gives the home user a more prominent experience of comfort and well being.

The Danfoss SpeedUp™ also comes in an ecological version SpeedUp Eco™.

Danfoss is taking a new step forward in the development of the heating systems of the future. New Opti technology ensures that a heat pump always works at optimum efficiency, in all weather conditions, which means maximum savings and minimum environmental impact. Opti operation is included in the new Opti range, along with several other exciting new features.

While launching a top-of-the-line range, Danfoss is taking the opportunity to include the most up-to-date and effective technology.
In addition to Opti technology, DHP-H Opti Pro, the premier product in the new range, offers improved hot water production. Thanks to new HGW technology* the heat pump can produce hot water in a highly cost-effective way while heating the home. This means extra amounts of hot water at low cost during the colder part of the year.

“We have used the most recent innovations available in our new Opti range. The result is a fantastic range of products that we are very proud of and feel very excited about launching on the European market. We also have a very positive view of opportunities presented by the new RES directive adopted by the European parliament. This directive means that heat pumps are classified as a renewable source of energy. Combined with the fact that Europe must increase the share of energy produced by renewable sources up to 2020 this opens up major opportunities for the future,” says Lars Bergen, Marketing Director for Danfoss Heat Pumps.

The new products in the Opti range have been produced by the Danfoss research and development centre in Sweden, and cover four models; two that extract energy from groundrock, soil, lake or ground water (DHP-H Opti Pro and DHP-L Opti), and two that extract energy from outdoor air (DHP-A Opti and DHP-AL Opti). They are available in five power outputs (6, 8, 10, 12 and 16 kW) and are being launched all over Europe.

*HGW (Hot Gas Water heater) is a patented method for producing hot water. This provides higher annual efficiency combined with unbeatable hot water comfort.

For more information:
Lars Bergen, Marketing Director, Danfoss Heat Pumps, Telephone: +45 7488 8616

The platform gathers and consults a wide range of key stakeholders throughout <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Europe. Open the related files link below to read their document.

Find more information about DHC+ and who the members of this platform are by following the below link.

Starting with the present-day situation, the Vision sets out in global terms how district heating and cooling stakeholders see the development of their technology towards the future. It reflects on the basic features of district heating and district cooling and on how the systems are expected to evolve throughout their subsequent stages of development, showing why they are key infrastructures for a resource efficient European energy system: both of today and of the future.

The document aims to draw a realistic picture of goals and expectations. Considering present-day differences in the state of district heating and cooling technology throughout <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Europe, the timeframes are approximate and present the final, pan-European state of technological achievement. In many regions, the described characteristics are realized far earlier than by the suggested periods.

Towards 2020 district heating and cooling will increase its contribution to the European Union 2020 energy targets with more energy efficient solutions and larger integration of renewable energy sources for heating and cooling.

By 2030 district heating and cooling systems act as intelligent energy exchange infrastructures, regulating interactions between the multiple energy sources feeding into the network and the various temperature demands of customers.

In 2050 district heating and cooling through regional, integrated networks offers fully carbon neutral energy solutions to its customers

The Danfoss Group started its production activities in the country in 2006 with the acquisition of Schmidt-Bretten Technology, Romania’s leading producer of district heating stations. Since then Danfoss has continued its investments in Romania in order to increase and modernise production capacity for these stations.

“District heating means higher energy efficiency for society and for end-users and the potential is enormous for modern district heating applications these days, especially in Eastern Europe. The high potential is the rationale behind this important investment”, says Senior Vice President of Danfoss District Heating, Lars Tveen.

Following successful realization of two previous tenders in 2006 and 2007, it has already delivered 127 substations, automatic controls and heat exchangers.

Together with significant exchange of application know-how, they have helped transform the efficiency and comfort of the energy supply to many of the city’s residents and workforce.

However, the recent 312-unit substation order represents the company’s biggest to date, and strengthens Danfoss’ presence in the region. So far, 188 units have been delivered out of the Danfoss LPM factory in Tuchom, Poland. The remaining 124 substations are scheduled for production, assembly and delivery in the first half of 2009.

The benefit of a 44% saving in heating tariffs helped make the advantages of a decentralized system tangible to residents and stakeholders, and sparked a wave of similar projects across the country.

Over the last two years, 700 Danfoss substations, type Akva Lux TDP and Akva Lux TDP-F have been installed in the city of Klaipeda, as well as being implemented into all new-builds in the city of Panevezys.

The same solutions will be used for a new multi-family house project that will provide 1,742 flats for 6,000 Gandraliskes residents.
By Erik Lund Kristiansen, Key Account Manager, Danfoss A/S

A “Perfect” indoor climate can be achieved by installing sensors for measuring and controlling all parameters. Despite this, the solution chosen is often a compromise between the costs and the indoor climate. But why compromise when it comes to the technical solution and thus the indoor climate?

The quality of the indoor climate is evaluated on parameters like dust, solar gain, lighting, draft/wind velocities, allergy friendly materials, interior decoration, humidity, room temperature, degree days, wind impact, dimensions of rooms and the number of people/occupants etc. Besides this, it is an important objective to reduce the CO2-emission, and it is a fact that the available fossil fuel deposits decrease, and as they do, the price goes up. This results in high focus on energy “correct” solutions for the indoor climate – both taking the product development, production, installation, commissioning and operation into account.

Comfort Cooling - an important parameter

The demands are high for ensuring an accurate control and a stable room temperature. Typically there is a lot of experience in controlling the heating in each room.
In commercial buildings (like offices, hotels, banks, shopping malls, hospitals etc.) the trend goes towards installation of comfort cooling in each room as a standard. By this means, it is avoided that too high room temperatures influence our wellbeing and our efficiency.

Studies clearly show a relation between oscillating temperatures, too high or too low temperatures and our efficiency.
How the room temperature is perceived is very individual.

This combined with a tendency going towards buildings with large window areas, better insulation etc play a vital part in connection with obtaining a good indoor climate and in relation to the demands on the technical installations and their interaction.

Product development is not only for the visible and tangible parameters but also all the products we do not notice but which still have a big impact on the indoor climate.

Balancing Valves ensure a precise flow
Danfoss has high focus on developing products which give a more precise control of the room temperature (both by heating and by comfort cooling) together with a reduction of the energy consumption.

When a big number of emitters are installed (radiators, fan-coils, chilled beams, air-handling-units, underfloor heating etc) in a building, like a hotel or office building, the individual emitters will often be connected to one common pipe work for heating and one common pipe work for cooling.

Each office should then only have the amount of energy available which is required at that time of the day and maximum the amount of energy which e.g. the chilled beam is designed for.

It is therefore necessary to install balancing valves, which ensure that there never is circulated more energy in the systems than required and that the energy required is available when needed.

Many resources are used for developing the right products, with the sole purpose of easing the work load in the daily business.

Traditionally, this has been done using high numbers of manual balancing valves - ensuring the distribution of energy in the building at maximum or design load – and many of the users found this system ”good enough”… But the fact is that a heating - or comfort cooling circuit is only at design load a very short period of time every year and that pressure oscillations continuously change the working conditions for the manual balancing valves.

If costs should be kept low and the system should stay technically competitive on energy consumption, flexible at system changes and not least the demanded user friendliness, the demands are far higher on these systems with variable flow than manual balancing valves can fulfil.

New relevant technology

New technology and innovative development has led to even better methods for reducing the total energy consumption for a building.
Circulator pumps are controlled according to the actual need by e.g. Danfoss VLT frequency converters and thus the pumping energy is reduced. This reduces the running costs, and in some cases even a smaller pump can be installed reducing the capital costs as well.

The room temperature is often controlled by self-acting or electronic thermostats for controlling the heating together with modern combination valves for the comfort cooling.

Reference project in Dubai

Modern combination valves combine an automatic flow limiter and a control valve in one valve house. This reduces the total number of valves required to ensure a stable and precise room temperature.

The demands for valves today are typically:
- long lifetime (incl. life-cycle-costs)
- high quality - accuracy
- high user friendliness during commissioning and usage – without the use of tools
- easy to install – reduced number of valves in the total system
- good service from the manufacturer – delivery on time

Special valve for comfort cooling
Danfoss has developed a special valve for comfort cooling. The AB-QM valve complies with the mentioned demands for an improved comfort or indoor climate.
It was the first automatic control valve on the market – which besides ensuring a correct balanced system also has a differential pressure independent control valve, which at all loads has 100% valve authority.

The wide selection of actuators available makes it possible to control the flow with all existing control signals being on/off or modulating (0-10V, 0-20 mA, PWM etc).
When a valve is installed at each emitter (fan-coil, chilled beam, air-handling unit etc), this emitter is secured against receiving too much flow or energy. The valve has an integrated flow limiter, which continuously reacts and counteracts against pressure oscillations thus reducing the amount of water to the maximum design load condition.

The choice of actuator and control system (stand-alone or BMS system) then controls the room temperature and the flow between no flow and the set maximum design flow.

If all emitters are restricted to receive only the design flow disregarding the changes in the pressure conditions, the entire system will be balanced without the use of other valves.

This is a huge advantage in projects implemented in stages. Then the individual valve is just installed as usual at each emitter and set for the design load for the controlled emitter. The building can then be commissioned and taken into use, and any later extensions or alterations do not influence the already existing system. This reduces the total project time consumption significantly and will reduce the running costs.

So the conclusion is that the possibility of creating a good indoor climate does exist also without compromises and without losing the competitiveness of the project economy.
