When compared with traditional brazed plate heat exchangers, MPHEs deliver an impressive range of advantages. Depending on the application and the capacities it requires, the new generation of heat exchangers can either significantly enhance heat transfer rate or reduce pressure loss. The Benefits and Advantages:1. Up to 10% enhanced heat transferAn ingenious redesign of the plate pattern in MPHEs significantly enhances their performance. The fluid moves across the plate with a relatively uniform velocity. Between the fastest and slowest flowing areas, the difference is only x 3, as opposed to x 10 in older heat exchanger models. This will distribute and mix fluid better and enhance the heat transfer by up to 10%.2. Up to 35% lower pressure lossThanks again to the unique plate design, the way that water is distributed inside the MPHE also reduces pressure loss. This means less energy is needed to drive the water round the system and consequently also lowers running costs.3. Longer life timeMPHEs enjoy a longer lifespan than other kinds of heat exchangers. There are several reasons for this. In an MPHE, there are more and bigger brazing points. They are flat and precisely aligned one above the other – all of which means that stress is more evenly distributed across the material and the construction is more robust. With MPHEs, there is also more freedom to position brazing points so they can be further strengthened at critical points. In addition to this, the improved plate design results in an improved flow within the heat exchanger which in turn leads to less fouling and scaling.
Improved flow characteristicsIn an MPHE, the flow around the brazing points is more uniform than in a BPHE, with a ratio between maximum and minimum velocities only one third of that in a BPHE. Furthermore, the flow is optimized for high turbulence and low frictional losses.
Uniform velocity – enhanced heat transferAn MPHE allows a more uniform velocity around the brazing points on both sides of the channel plate. The equal distance enable enhanced heat transfer along with a lower pressure drop.
