Starting with the present-day situation, the Vision sets out in global terms how district heating and cooling stakeholders see the development of their technology towards the future. It reflects on the basic features of district heating and district cooling and on how the systems are expected to evolve throughout their subsequent stages of development, showing why they are key infrastructures for a resource efficient European energy system: both of today and of the future.
The document aims to draw a realistic picture of goals and expectations. Considering present-day differences in the state of district heating and cooling technology throughout Europe, the timeframes are approximate and present the final, pan-European state of technological achievement. In many regions, the described characteristics are realized far earlier than by the suggested periods.
Towards 2020 district heating and cooling will increase its contribution to the European Union 2020 energy targets with more energy efficient solutions and larger integration of renewable energy sources for heating and cooling.
By 2030 district heating and cooling systems act as intelligent energy exchange infrastructures, regulating interactions between the multiple energy sources feeding into the network and the various temperature demands of customers.
In 2050 district heating and cooling through regional, integrated networks offers fully carbon neutral energy solutions to its customers |
